In addition to its warmth and softness, carpeting is popular because it takes less upkeep and maintenance than hard flooring. The only real maintenance needed to keep carpet looking new and fresh is routine vacuuming and the occasional deep-clean scrubbing.
Nevertheless, despite your best efforts, spills, splatters, messy mishaps, and whatever you track in on the bottom of your shoes will eventually ruin your carpet.
Professional Tip #1 Rub Stains, Not Blot Them!
When a spill or stain first happens, hold off on immediately beginning to scrub. The stain will only get deeper into the carpet if you do that. Instead, use a clean cloth, paper towel, or sponge to gently dab stains with a cleaning solution.
“Blotting is essential. Blotting applies light pressure on the stain to enable soaking, “said Tarbox. “Rubbing forces the particles into the fibers, which may cause those fibers to prematurely break down.”
Blotting outward can cause the stain to spread deeper across the carpet, so always blot from the stain’s outer edge inward toward the center.
Professional Tip #2 Vinegar and Club Soda are Your Friends
You may have heard that club soda may be used to properly utilize to remove beer and wine stains from carpeting.
First, dab the stain with a clean cloth after adding club soda to it. Repeat the process with more club soda if the stain seems lighter. If it doesn’t work, combine white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and pour the mixture into a portable spray bottle. “Spray the remedy on the stain and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes to absorb. Then, apply pressure with a clean, dry sponge to the wet area to absorb both the cleaning solution and the diluted stain, advises Tarbox. Whenever necessary, repeat this procedure.
“Rinse the area with clean, warm water after removing the discoloration. Brush the carpet fibers back in their normal direction using your hand. Last but not least, spread out several white paper towels over the region and press them down with a heavy object, like a phone book, advises Tarbox.
Leave the towels in place until the carpet is dry, which should take approximately a day, since they will absorb the moisture from the carpet.
Professional Tip #3 Consider shaving cream
Unbelievable as it may sound, it is stated that regular shaving cream works the best on general stains on carpet. “It will practically eliminate any stain. For roughly 30 minutes, directly apply the shaving cream to the discoloration, advises Tarbox. Blot the shaving cream with a dry white linen when it has dried.
White vinegar and water mixed 50/50 should be sprayed over the area to finish, and the solution should be wiped away with a cloth.
